Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment
Darlene Edmondson

“There is no mercy for those who do not show mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when He judges you” (James 2:13 NIV)

About 33 A.D., a new rabbi arrived on the scene. Rumors rapidly spread in Palestine, insisting this holy man was a ‘friend of sinners’ (Mark 2:16). Eventually, these scandalous whisperings caught the attention of honorable scribes and Pharisees. Unhinged, they were ashamed of Jesus’ behavior and searched for errors in His sermons. Nothing would please them more than trapping Jesus. If successful, they would charge Him with false teachings. Maybe even sedition. In short, they would be rid of this annoying carpenter. After all, can a mere prophet, much less a miraculous healer come out of Nazareth? No.

Early one morning, having spent the night praying in Mount Olivet, Jesus arrived at the temple. He sat down and began teaching. Just then, a commotion erupted. It was a raging crowd. The mob watched as religious leaders thrust an immoral woman in front of Jesus. With clenched jaws, murderous threats came from her accusers.

“Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” (John 8: 4b-5 NIV)

After writing words in the sand, Jesus replied, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7b NIV)

Thankfully, Jesus is the only one qualified to throw stones. But does He? No. Rather, He grants mercy and forgiveness that leads to a fresh beginning. Dear reader, the vilest offender cannot exhaust Jesus’ depths of loving compassion and grace. Simply, come to Him today in repentance, asking for mercy and forgiveness.

Wondrous and marvelous Father, have mercy. Help us to grow into Your likeness. Amen.

Recent Amazon Review:

"For anyone on the fence, backsliding, or doubtful this book clarifies misunderstandings, perceived contradictions, and outright lies. I was led to read this book at a time when I thought I was over Jesus; but truth defeats lies every time and never forsakes the believer." 2-18-17
