Today's Devotional
Prayer Life - Karen Pourbabaee

“Pray without ceasing.” I Thessalonians 5:17 NAS

As believers, we’re all concerned with prayer. When’s the best time to pray? How should I pray? How long? Where? Am I praying enough? Can I ever be holy if I don’t pray that proverbial hour a day?

“Prayer is conversation with God.” (St. Clement) Anytime or anywhere we talk with God, we’re praying. Not just during morning devotions, but at our work desks, while driving, or singing. At the kitchen sink or stove, as well as at church. Conversation is a dialogue involving listening, too. Wherever we listen and hear God’s voice is a place of prayer. In the voice of a friend, or even a child. Perhaps in the lyrics of a song, amidst nature’s beauty, or in a Bible study group. Studying scripture is listening to the Living Word and communing with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth; that, too, is prayer. God sprinkles our ordinary lives with prayer.

Let’s broaden our concept of prayer; it doesn’t cease when our voices do. “The life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice-holy God and in communion with Him.” (CCC2565) Merely being in His presence is prayer. Surely during quiet study or contemplation and prayerful words, in total silence or the cascade of noisy tears. But also in His nearness during the ordinary moments of our days.

Conversation and communion are the elements of prayer life. More than something we do, but a way of being. Being attentive, being in His presence, being His child. The only way to “pray without ceasing.” This is the prayer life God desires for you.

Lord, help me to pray without ceasing, Amen

Recent Amazon Review:

"For anyone on the fence, backsliding, or doubtful this book clarifies misunderstandings, perceived contradictions, and outright lies. I was led to read this book at a time when I thought I was over Jesus; but truth defeats lies every time and never forsakes the believer." 2-18-17
