A Light in the Darkness – Toni Babcock
Isaiah Chapter 58 addresses the importance and the reward of living a life of authentic worship and obedience to God, the sum of which God speaks through the prophet Isaiah:
"Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday, " (Isaiah 58:9-10 KJV).
To paraphrase God's appeal, we could say, "If you are discouraged by weak faith, then strengthen your sister or brother. If you are hungry for what really satisfies, then share Jesus with someone else. If you are afflicted by calamity, illness, or some other thorn in the flesh, then tend to the needs of someone else's calamity, or affliction, or a thorn in the flesh. Do this wherever and whenever you can, then shall your light rise in the darkness, and your gloom becomes like the noonday.
Jesus once said to the religious leaders who were fond of pointing their finger in judgment and speaking vanity, "But go ye and learn what [this means], I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance," (Matthew 9:13 KJV). There is no better way to attract wounded sinners to Christ then to live a life full of the Spirit of God.
