Though He Slay Me
Anna Darlene Edmondson

“We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. You know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy” (James 5:11 NLT).

North Carolina native Luther Bridgers began preaching at age seventeen while attending Asbury College in Kentucky. Afterward, he developed a reputation as an effective pastor and church planter. The Lord blessed him with a wonderful wife and three precious boys. In 1910, Luther took his family to visit in-laws near Lexington. One night, a nearby neighbor awoke and watched the house go up in flames where the Bridgers slept. Luther’s mother and father-in-law escaped, but his wife and sons perished. Luther himself had to be restrained from re-entering the collapsing inferno.

During the long, slow recovery from grief, Luther suffered deep depression. In time, however, he began recalling God’s promise to give ‘songs in the night’ (Job 35:10). Perhaps he found solace in the book of Job to soothe his grievous soul. Time marched on and Mr. Bridgers continued preaching. From 1932-1944, he wrote many hymns and pastored several churches.

As we recall, Job’s story begins with a heavenly debate between God and Satan. Having full trust and confidence in Job, God suggested, “Have you considered my servant Job?” (Job 1:7-8). Without delay, Satan accepted God’s offer but was not allowed to take Job’s life. However, Job lost everything--wealth, family, reputation, health, and livestock. Even Job’s wife begged him to ‘curse God and die’. Job experienced unbearable torment, yet he painfully endured, promising himself, “Though He slay me, l will trust in Him” (Job 13:15)

Thank You, Eternal Father, our strong refuge with loving arms underneath, keeping us safe (Deut 33:27)
