Today's Devotional
That Fussy Machine - Ken Ebright

“It is worthless to have the whole world if they lose their souls.” (Mark 8:36, NCV)

On some days, my job of processing mail for nine different charities can feel tedious. It’s like working on an assembly line.

The fussy machine that opens the mail is supposed to make life easier. It won’t take mangled envelopes and will destroy perfect ones. When those pieces get stuck or destroyed, I may end up having to open fifty envelopes by hand. When that happens, I feel stressed because it takes so much extra time and causes me to fall behind schedule. I worry I may not be able to meet my quota, which means I could be in trouble with my supervisor. On days like that, people wonder why I walk around in a bad mood.

What do you do when things go wrong at your job? Times like this have forced me to evaluate what is important in life, such as my relationship with Jesus. I used to have a job that interfered with my time with the Lord. I had been worshiping my job, not God. He had to take my career away to get my attention. These days, I spend time reading the Word and try to win people to Jesus. It’s about a relationship with Jesus, not a career that will end someday.

If you happen to have a job that you enjoy and it doesn't feel like work, you are blessed. I believe it can be possible to love your job and have a close relationship with the Lord, but keep it balanced. A successful career does not get you admitted to Heaven, but a relationship with Jesus and trusting in Him alone for salvation will.
