The Parable of the Yeast Jennifer Woodley
"The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened." Matt 13:33 (NRSV)
The work that God is doing in our soul can be compared to the action of yeast mixed into flour. Just as the woman in the parable has to wait until the yeast leavens fully, so we are asked to wait patiently until God gradually works to bring about the bread of life in us. The work cannot be rushed. It takes an unseen mysterious work on His part and patient waiting on ours.
There are no short cuts or quick methods of making a quality loaf of bread. If we impatiently rush the process, the end result will be a half risen, heavy tasting loaf. So too we must wait with our questions, in difficult, dark times until God reveals His will and purposes and the life of Christ is formed in us. The patient act of waiting, eventually unravels the right answer if nothing is forced. Some things we must simply wait to receive. Like the process of yeasting that unfolds gradually, so too must our souls learn to wait.
How well are we waiting with God? Is Christ's life being formed in us as we rest quietly in His Presence? Entering into the darkness of waiting can reveal our anxieties and desperate longing to do something. We would rather do anything than sit still and appear to be doing nothing. Be assured in this position, there is much happening. Let us return to God and rest. It is His turn to act upon us.
