JURY DUTY - Mary Toll

"And He (Jesus) came back a third time and said to them, 'Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough [of that]! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinful men.'" (Mark 14:41 AMP Parenthetical clause added for clarification.)

"What an inconvenience." I frowned, reading the jury duty summons that came in the mail. Without a legitimate reason to be excused, I grudgingly filled in the paperwork at my kitchen table and mailed it back the next day.

Before Jesus' arrest in Gethsemane, He was struck with terror, felt amazed, and was deeply troubled and depressed (Mark 14:33). I could sense Jesus scolding me like he did His disciples, Awake! You grumble against the innocent who suffer when facing evil in court. You behave like religious leaders in their hour of need. I, Myself, felt pain and abandonment, and was falsely accused...your attitude reveals your against Me, too (Philippians 2:14).

On the day of jury duty, I heard weak excuses coming from others in the courtroom that sounded much like my own. "I had a negative experience." "I couldn't judge or sentence." "I don't trust the police." I worried some people might convict without examining all of the facts. All I heard were excuses that began with the word, I. By neglecting our civic duties and refusing to pray for those in legal battles, we are conforming to a Judas-style approach. We deceive ourselves by kissing goodbye unique opportunities to shine and attract others to Christ (Matthew 5:14).

Father, being chosen a juror that day was an honor, like becoming one of Jesus' disciples. By choosing compassion over feeling inconvenienced in serving, I twinkled like a star for You in court (Philippians 2:16).

God's Word blesses my world; let my words bless His Kingdom.
