Why Worry? – Jennifer Woodley
‘Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you also.’ Matthew 6:33 (NRSV)
The current climate lends itself to worry, however, this scripture offers a sure and steadfast antidote to worry and anxiety. Seeking first the kingdom is the cure for all the common human struggles. Seeking first the kingdom means facing our trials and troubles with a rock solid trust that God can and will work in them. When we seek first the kingdom, everything else falls into its proper place.
Worry prevents us from seeking the kingdom. As long as we are worrying, we can’t seek first the kingdom. As long as we are seeking first the kingdom, we can’t worry.
In Philippians, Paul encourages us not to worry, but to seek first the kingdom by praying. He invites us to turn our cares into prayers. When we do, we’ve put the matter into God’s hands. Our concerns are placed in the larger context of the kingdom and we’ve invited God to use the resources of the kingdom to meet our needs. Then our worries are replaced with a peace that surpasses understanding.
Through prayer, we learn that no matter if our concern is big or small, the provision of the kingdom of God is available to us for every circumstance. Prayer helps us see things from God’s perspective, which has so much more favour and potential than the limitations of our own perspective. Now our problems are seen in a new light.
Let’s embrace each day knowing that we are people in whom Christ dwells and seeking first the Kingdom that we belong to – God’s Kingdom.
