Wholeheartedly Follow God
Darlene Edmondson

“But My servant Caleb possesses a different spirit and follows me fully. I will bring him and his seed into the land to possess it” (Num 14:24 NIV)

Do you remember Rocky (Sylvester Stallone)? He sparred half-heartedly when he began his boxing career. Soon, he met Adrian, a pretty lady worth fighting for, and was fully engaged in his calling. Bolstered by his new girlfriend and trustworthy trainer, Rocky began competing against champions. Donning a cocky attitude, each knockout added another dose of determination. These challenging encounters reinforced his conquering spirit. Along with the ‘never-give-up’ mantra and a ‘can-do-swagger,’ Rocky won Adrian’s heart and a championship.

Who knows, perhaps Caleb’s success story had inspired Rocky. If so, he realized that Caleb purposed within himself to wholeheartedly follow God. Out of pure love for God, Caleb’s faith became stronger and more determined, leading him to declare:

“At eighty-five years of age, I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out. I am vigorous to fight battles now as I was then” (Josh 14:11)

After rescuing his people from Egyptian bondage, God issued a perfect promise. In detail, an inheritance of plentiful land, flowing with milk and honey. Yet, the land had to be taken by faith from their daunting Canaanite enemies. Upon hearing that requirement, virtually all the Israelites were terrified, refusing even to set foot in their promised haven of rest.

However, having a spirit of faith, Caleb envisioned the adversaries as ‘grasshoppers’ and God greater. Together, Joshua and Caleb embraced the spirit of faith rather than fear, allowing God to bring them into the promised land.

“Let’s go up at once and take possession, for we will overcome” (Num 13:30).

In closing, all believers who follow Christ by faith will abide eternally with him in the true promised land.

“I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from God” (Rev 21:2)
