What Is Your Answer?
Marlene Custer

What do you want to be when you grow up? What college or occupation do you want to pursue? Who will you marry? Will you have children? Are you willing to take an assignment in another country halfway around the world? All are great questions.

When I think of important questions, I think of Jesus and the questions He asked while on earth. He often taught by asking questions. “Why are you so afraid?” (Matthew 8:26 NIV) “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” (Matthew 9:28 NIV) “What can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26 NIV)

I think the most important question posed by Jesus was a time when He was in conversation with his disciples towards the end of His ministry. The incident is recorded in Matthew 16: 13-17 NIV. Perhaps they were away from the crowds, sitting together on a grassy hillside, a cool breeze blowing. They may have been bantering back and forth when Jesus asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

Somewhat startled, they stop and focus on Jesus. “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah...Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”

Then He came back with a question that each of us must answer at some point. With piercing eyes, He looked at each and asked, “Who do you say I am?”

Is Jesus of Nazareth more than a good man, or a great teacher? Do you believe He is who He said He is—the only way to the Father? I pray your answer is, “You are my Lord and my Savior!”
