Victorious Over the Enemy - Cheryl Weber
I was watching a wildlife documentary recently in which a large and highly poisonous scorpion was making its way across the desert. A cute little mouse ventured closer and closer. I cringed as I waited to see the furry little guy die a terrible death. Instead, I was shocked to see him attack the scorpion, kill it and eat it. He then stood on his tiny hind legs, opened his mouth and let out a shrill cry as if in victory. This little creature is the grasshopper mouse, the only flesh-eating mouse in North America, and can withstand the scorpion's venom.
In Luke 10:19, we learn that Christ has given believers authority to trample on snakes and scorpions. This reference refers not to a physical principle, but a spiritual reality. The devil was depicted as a serpent when he tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, and he tempts, lies to us, and attacks in any way he can.
But Ephesians 6:12 says we can fight the demonic powers behind actions and events. And we can win. We are destined to win. As God's sons and daughters, filled with his all-powerful Holy Spirit, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37), and we can defeat the power of the evil one through our faith (1 John 5:4-5). Jesus Christ has handed us the victory. He is in us, and he is far greater than all (1 John 4:4). In him and through him, we can be like that little mouse, victorious over the poisonous lies and attacks of Satan, strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.
PRAYER: Almighty, holy God, I thank you that through my faith in you and the indwelling presence of your Holy Spirit, I am more than a conqueror and can defeat all the enemy's works through your mighty power. AMEN.
