Spiritual Boredom – Jennifer Woodley

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world.” 1 John 2:15 (NRSV)

Boredom is prevalent in the Church of God today. Boredom is rooted in impatience. Christians have grown impatient with waiting upon God. They, like the culture they live in, want action now. God is too slow in providing answers, and so bored with walking by faith and not by sight, they lust for a host of things visible and temporal to satisfy their boredom.

With no Biblical authority, Christians have introduced a range of attractions to keep themselves amused, happy and entertained. Much to the chagrin of God, many of our churches are filled with maximum entertainment and minimum serious instruction. Nowadays, it is difficult to get people to church where God is the main attraction. Take note of how many churches woo people to attend to enjoy all the benefits they have on offer, rather than to know and enjoy God.

But do we ever stop to think if this is part of the teachings of Christ and if this technique was part of the New Testament churches? Entertainment is so ingrained into our psyche, we take it for granted in the church too.

Are we bringing people to an entertaining, fun-loving Christian experience or to true discipleship? To cross-carrying? To self-denial? To holy living? To love for God and committal to Christ?

Have we become a people so bored with God, that we are paying the price – becoming carnal Christians? This is surely a clarion call for us all today to wake up from our complacency, seek forgiveness and follow Christ more closely.
