Mike the Car Salesman – Ken Ebright
“Better to be a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.” (Proverbs 28:6 ESV)
While getting my car fixed at a dealer, I noticed the salesmen ‘licking their chops’ over who was going to pounce on the next customer checking out cars in the lot. Have you ever come across a similar situation?
When you purchase a car, it might be hard to find a salesman who is honest and who exhibits integrity. Often, instead of putting the customer first, many salesmen seem only to ask the question, “What can I do to convince this person they need to buy a car today?” Unfortunately, a number of salespeople in the car business seem to have gained that kind of reputation.
In 2001, while listening to a Christian talk radio station, I heard about a local salesman named Mike. He was a Christian known by many as “a friend in the car business”— so I decided to check him out. I found an honest man who had character and integrity; one who was concerned that I find the car that was best for me, even if I ended up buying it at a different dealership. He didn’t play the games many salesmen play. In fact, the issue of character was so important to Mike he started his own radio show called, “Quest for Character.”
As a Christian, Mike held onto his integrity. He wanted to do what was right in the eyes of the Lord and not be “crooked in his ways.” Even though there was obvious pressure on him to sell cars and make money, I don’t think Mike worried about money. I believe he trusted the Lord to provide for his financial needs.
As Christians, we need to have integrity. The question is — are you willing to do what is right even if it costs you?
