"Good to see you, Diane," a member of my Sunday school class says on her way out the door. While I appreciate the thought, my name is actually Laurie. My sister Diane and I are long-time roommates and go many places together, so it's not uncommon for me to be called "Diane." In fact, sometimes I'll even answer to it!
Or, at work a customer says "Thank you very much for your help, Linda," and I tell them "You're welcome" without even correcting them. I must admit being called the wrong name leaves a little dent on my heart — but guess what? God knows my name.
In His Word, God tells each of us "I have called you by name, you are mine." Wow. Let that thought soak into your heart. It would be amazing, even shocking – if at a huge event of thousands of people, the President of the United States leaned into the microphone and said, "I see my good friend, Laurie Kiel (or fill in your own name) is in the audience today. I'm glad you're here." If that happened (regardless of who the President was at the time) my heart would skip a beat at the fact the most powerful person in the free world knew my name.
But you and I have something far greater. The Creator of the Universe knows us, claims us as His, and has called us by name.
