The Light and Life of the Gospel – Toni Babcock
“While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light…” (John 12:36 KJV).
If we are going to be contagious, let’s be contagious with the light of the gospel. Let’s spread the love of Christ and bring hope and the good news however we can, in spite of the uncertainties of our time. We can be an influence even when asked to avoid large crowds and maintain appropriate social distancing during the COVID-19 outbreak. Texting, video chats or sharing on social media can still bring hope, encouragement and love to those confined to their homes by choice or necessity. A phone call or a heart-felt card or e-mail is welcome, too. No matter how dark the night, we are here to bring the light of Christ to those who need Him – and we all need Him.
One therapy used during the 1918 influenza pandemic was the sun. Richard Hobday brought this little-known fact to light in an article titled Coronavirus and the Sun: a Lesson from the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Doctors became convinced the patients who were exposed daily to fresh air and sunshine fared far better than those who remained cooped up inside with poor ventilation. (Since ultraviolet radiation from the sun is a natural disinfectant and fresh air is arguably good for anybody, they appeared to be on to something.) What a powerful picture of the Son of God who brings light and life to the spiritually sick who have been exposed to the cleansing light and truth of the gospel and have put their trust in Him.
