Isolation—How Long? - Marlene Custer
Don’t leave your house. Stay six feet apart. Wear a mask. Don’t congregate with a crowd. These are all good suggestions for living during a pandemic. However, there have been adverse consequences to these guidelines. Depression has increased, there has been a considerable rise in suicides, and people have spent their last days and moments in isolation without even close family to hold their hand.
I think we have to balance how much we are going to isolate ourselves with what the Scriptures tell us to do. We definitely want to take precautions to protect ourselves, our families and friends. Yet we need each other. It didn’t take The Creator long to provide Adam with companionship.
The writer of Hebrews admonishes us, “Let us not give up meeting together...but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Jesus, Himself promised that “where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” We can meet outside, or limit the number we meet with, and maintain social distancing, but I feel Scripture is telling us to make an effort to be together.
Paul the Apostle reminded the Ephesians to “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” So I encourage you to use common sense, but don’t neglect those relationships that are not only important, but commanded by Scripture.
“Father, please guide me through this pandemic. Help me to take proper precautions, yet not neglect being with fellow believers. Help me to encourage others as I allow them to encourage me. Amen.”
