Is Your Heart Good Soil for God’s Seed? Cheryl Weber
“The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” (Matthew 13:23 NLT)
Jesus told a parable about a farmer who tossed handfuls of seed across his fields, letting it land where it might, a common way of planting in that culture. People understood the various types of soil the seed might have fallen upon–hard, weedy, stony, or good–and how the seed fared in each. In Jesus’s parable, these soils represented four types of hearts with the good soil representing those in which Jesus’s teaching rooted deeply and grew.
We usually understand this story as representative of those hearing the gospel for the first time. Only a few, or those with good soil, really receive and live out their salvation. But those four types could also be compared to our spiritual condition as believers. The Holy Spirit wants to teach us, to speak to us, and guide us. When he does, we can harden our hearts; a very dangerous response. Or, the weeds of sin and spiritual neglect can choke out his voice. Busyness and affection for other things can so distract our hearts that the Spirit’s call finds little or no depth in which to root itself.
But we can repent and ask God to “weed and fertilize” our souls. We can nourish our spirits through regular prayer and time in his Word and by humble obedience to what he asks of us. Our hearts can then be good spiritual soil that receives the blessing of God’s “seed,” leading to an abundant harvest of life-changing fruit.
PRAYER: Lord God, may my heart be always soft and fertile so that I can receive the “seed” of your word and bear much fruit for you. Amen.
