Encourage One Another - Cheryl Weber
In Samuel 1:23, we read a dramatic account of David’s flight from King Saul’s deadly jealousy. David runs from one place to another, his enemies in hot pursuit. At one point, he finds himself on the opposite side of a mountain from Saul and his men.
What pressure David must have felt. What a test of his trust in God. He called on the Lord again and again for help, and the Lord answered. One of those answers came in the form of Jonathan, son of Saul, who became David’s closest and most loyal friend. In 1 Samuel 23:16, we read, “Jonathan went to find David and encouraged him to stay strong in his faith in God” (NLT).
We live in tumultuous and disturbing times. The COVID-19 crisis has forced separation and isolation upon us, leaving us feeling scattered, discouraged, fearful, and lonely. Such situations can make us “easy pickings” for the enemy and render us ineffective for God’s kingdom. So we must be intentional about building one another up. In the power of God’s Holy Spirit and from the authority of his Word, we can “go find” that brother or sister who needs encouragement and help them stay strong in their faith. And when we are struggling, we can reach out for support from the Lord and other believers.
In the process, we will spur one another on to good works (Hebrews 10:24-25), and we will grow in the unity Jesus prayed for in John 17. We can then reach out together in the power of God’s Spirit to a world lost and dying in darkness and sin.
PRAYER: Jesus, thank you for your body, the church. Please help us make regular fellowship and encouragement of one another a priority as we go and share your good news of salvation. Amen.
