I love to work from a list. Whether it’s planning a vacation, having guests over for dinner, or just going to the grocery store, I like to see what I need to get or have to do. What a pleasure to be able to cross an item off my list.
While this works well with vacations and grocery shopping, what about our Christian life? Do you ever struggle with wondering if you’re doing enough, or if you need to be doing something else to grow in Christ? Well, look no further. The Apostle Peter addresses this dilemma in his second letter to the early church. Peter asserts:
“Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know personally and intimately the One who invited us to God.” (2 Peter 1:3 The Message). Then he gives us a list!
We are to add to our faith goodness (good character, integrity), knowledge (spiritual understanding and proficiency), self-control (discipline), perseverance (passionate patience), godliness (reverent wonder, prayerfulness), kindness (warm friendliness, gentleness), and love (tenderness, cherishing). “If you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:5-9 NIV)
How do we get to know Jesus intimately and personally? We must spend time with Him. Read His Word and talk with Him. I would encourage you to take these virtues one at a time and conscientiously cultivate them in your life.
“Jesus, thank you for Your Word. Please help me to understand it as I hide it in my heart. Help me to truly exhibit integrity, knowledge of your Word, discipline, patience, prayerfulness, gentleness, and deep tender love for all. Thank you. Amen.”
