Bean-Musing – Toni M. Babcock
“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another,” (Romans 12:5 KJV).
Today my husband asked me to walk out to the garden and pick fresh green-beans for supper. We’ve got four rows side by side in a modest garden patch. I’ve noticed two rows look healthier than the others — their vines are darker green and noticeably fuller. Two other rows are a bit dwarfed, their leaves a little paler, and the vines a little thinner. Nevertheless, I pick through all four rows, believing that in spite of appearance I will find something of value that will nourish and feed our bodies.
The interesting thing about green beans is they’re often difficult to spot. I can’t rush bean-picking. They’re the same color as the vines and many of the leaves they grow under, so they’re easy to miss. What a shame to come back on another day and find beans I missed hanging on the vine too long and now they’re swollen and too tough to enjoy.
As I picked through the vines I thought about my relationship with other Christians in the body of Christ. We too were created to bless and nourish each other in Christ. We may not look as desirable as some of the other members. We may look a little tired and a little past our prime with not much nourishment to give. But if we belong to Jesus, we are still bearing fruit. It’s hidden somewhere beneath the growth. It’s time we all slow down and discover the fruit of the Spirit in each of our lives and look for the gifts we have to offer in Jesus Name.
