Be Quick to Listen - Jane H. Young
“He who has ears, let him hear,” (Matthew 13:9 NASB).
Have you ever caught yourself coming up with an answer before someone is finished telling you what’s on their mind? Were you actually listening to what the other person was saying, or were you totally focused on your response to them — hearing only half of what they said? Was it because what you wanted to say was more important then what you were being told?
If we think what we have to say is more significant than actually listening to what another person is sharing with us, then we’d better check how well our hearts are listening to God when He speaks. Do we think what we have to say is more important than actually listening to what God is trying to tell or teach us?
Listen to whatever God is saying to you with your whole heart and don’t shut Him down by trying to get in a response before He’s finished speaking. The truth is, when we get so into our own thoughts and reasoning we’ll only hear part of what God is trying to tell us (if we hear anything He’s trying to say at all). We’ll pray but we won’t take time to listen — then complain God is not hearing our prayers. It’s not that He isn’t giving us an answer to our prayers. The real problem is we’re not hearing His answer to our prayers!
We have so much on our minds, and yes, I know life is busy — but we need to give more attention to what God is saying than anything else in our lives. When we pray, let’s be quick to listen to God’s answer. It may not always be the answer we want to hear, but it will always be the answer we need to hear.
Lord help us to hear not only with our ears but our hearts as well.
