Today's Devotional
What Pleases God? - Susan Barnes

But he answered his father, "Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders." Luke 15:29 NIV

What was the older brother's problem in this parable? To us he seems like the perfect son, obedient, disciplined and hard-working. What more could a parent want? What more could God want?

Micah the prophet asks, "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (6:8). The older son's problem was he was only fulfilling one of the three requirements - to act justly. He certainly didn't love mercy. He was angry when his father showed mercy to his younger brother. This obedient son didn't think he needed mercy so he was reluctant to extend it to others. However he was only looking at his outward performance and not the attitude of his heart. Sometimes we don't love mercy because we forget how much we need it ourselves.

The older brother also wasn't humble since it takes humility to ask and this brother never asked for anything. Often we don't ask because we feel self-sufficient; that we can make it on our own; that we don't need anyone's help or that we don't need people to show us love by throwing us a party. When we feel this way we are not being humble. We show humility when we ask for what we need and are open to receiving from our Father.

The older brother had an incomplete understanding of what pleased his Father. May we grow in our understanding of God so we know what truly pleases him.
