The people who God calls us to work amongst belong to him. Ultimately their salvation is his doing, not ours. We have been given the responsibility to minister to them. However, the outcome of our work, if done obediently and faithfully and in a way that honors God, is not our concern. How freeing this is! We are merely God's laborers. He is still the miracle worker who brings people to repentance and salvation.
The moment that we feel indispensable or weighed down in the labor we are doing, it may be because we have taken on too much. The main work belongs to God, not us. We must remember that God employs us to lay the groundwork, but his loving Spirit does the most important work of drawing people to Christ.
The seventy men were sent out into the towns to prepare the villagers for Christ's arrival. They were to say, "The Kingdom of God has come near to you." (verse 9). Today, we breach the path to the hearts of those we meet with acts of kindness and words of love that offer peace and hope. We are preparing the way for the vital work of the Spirit who draws people to their Savior, Jesus Christ.
Father, forgive me for when, in disobedience, I have not faithfully done the work you have asked of me but have tried vainly to do the work of your Spirit. May I give you room to do your work in the lives of those you call me to minister to. Amen
