I grew up believing God loved me but fearful he'd reject me if I messed up "one too many times." Psalms 7:11 seemed to reinforce my youthful picture of God as an angry judge holding a bat.
"God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day." NASB
Recently, I saw that verse in a whole new way.
Any decent person is outraged at the news of innocent children being abused, terrorists raping and bombing, little girls being forced into prostitution, drunk drivers killing whole families.
If our righteous anger is not aroused at crime and injustice, something is very wrong. Likewise, if God, from whom nothing can be hidden, is not also indignant, than he is NOT a holy and loving God. Instead, his indignation over evil shows he cares deeply about us and what we are doing to each other.
Each of us makes choices that contribute to the suffering in this world-even in small ways. God knew evil could be eliminated only through changed hearts. So he chose to get involved in the greatest possible way and sent Jesus to die for us on a Roman cross.
When we turn to Christ for forgiveness, give up wrongdoing and follow him daily, we receive new hearts that make loving choices. Philippians 2:13 says, "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him." (NLT)
The next time we hear of evil and injustice, we can remember that God's daily indignation means he cares, he loves, and he is involved. He is calling us to yield our hearts and lives to him and partner with him in changing the world.
