After we become Christians, we often put ourselves on a self-improvement program. We try to be more loving, more patient, more forgiving and when we fail we try harder. Perhaps we pray more or read the Bible more often yet this doesn't seem to help either. What's the solution?
We remember how we began the Christian life. "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him" (Colossians 2:6). We continue our Christian walk the same way as we started. Not by striving to obtain God's approval through human effort but by accepting Jesus' work on our behalf.
2 Corinthians 3:18 tells us, "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image… " It's Jesus who does the changing in me as my life becomes more and more centered on him.
If we try to achieve this change by 'means of the flesh' we will find our experience to be that of Romans 7:18 "For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out". But Paul goes on in v. 25 to thank God that he has rescued us from this experience.
Let's join with Paul and thank God that Jesus is willing and able to do in us, what we cannot do ourselves, that is, become more Christ-like.
