Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis is quite expansive, offering a variety of wildlife. Spending a weekend there, we wanted to get some good animal photos. My ultimate hope was for images of a deer with a precious little fawn. After scouting the most likely area to find our subjects, we left a trail of bait leading to a motherlode of food positioned near our camouflaged perch.
It didn't take long for the first tentative doe to come edging in, although she remained obscured by brush. Our visitor munched on the trail of bait crumbs, yet was too nervous to come and feed on the big pile of food where we could film clearly. Perhaps she detected the scent of humans. We never did get the picture for which we hoped.
Back at our basecamp that night, I read the above scripture. I realized that God has showcased His love to draw us close to Him, so that He can lavish tremendous spiritual blessing and gifts upon us. As God's children and coheirs with Christ, our kingly dividends begin the moment we're saved. Yet, like timid deer, we sometimes cling to our fears and fail to trust God's love completely. Jesus wants to provide joy, peace and spiritual sustenance. Real treasures await. But we settle for the crumbs, not understanding that we could be feasting on His limitless supply.
Lord, help us abandon our doubts and fears, and trust you more fully. Enlighten our hearts with your love and wisdom. Forgive our hesitation to accept your invitation to the banqueting table, amen.
