Spiritual Temples – Toni Babcock
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal," (II Corinthians 4:18 KJV).
I stood in an elevator in a senior citizen's residence, next to an old man who lived in the beautifully maintained facility. He was shaking his head and complaining about the food being served that day, as opposed to the beauty of his surroundings. "You can't eat beauty" he groused. All I could do was lend a sympathetic ear. I still chuckle when I think of the amusing encounter.
If such a man wandered into our church looking for spiritual food, what would he find? A message from God's Word that gave a hungry old man what he truly needed to feed his soul, or something he couldn't really digest on account of all that beauty?
Sensing man's propensity to substitute the seen for the unseen, I have to remind myself - where is it that the living God truly lives? The Bible tells me those who believe the gospel of Christ are the temple of his Spirit, (I Corinthians 6:19-20 KJV). That means the Spirit of the living God lives in my heart! It's the whole reason Christ died and rose again; so ordinary people like you and me could become His temple and live for his glory.
