Today's Devotional
Provision For All - Jennifer Woodley

"'Dear woman, here is your son.' Then he said to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.'" (John 19:26-27 NIV)

Mary's sense of abandonment and oppression mounted. Yet, in this moment of overwhelming grief and confusion as her son hung bloodied and battered before her, Jesus turned and looked tenderly into her face. "Woman," Jesus said, "here is your son." His gaze moved to John standing close beside her. "Here is your mother." Mary understood that she was being entrusted to John's care and would not be left alone.

Even in His moment of greatest trial and torture, Jesus saw His mother's suffering, felt her despair, and offered her the comfort and provision she needed. He made a way forward for Mary by connecting her with John, who would become like a son and would provide her comfort and security in her final years.

Jesus sees our needs, feels our pain, and understands our confusion when the roads ahead are uncertain and unclear. Surely if Jesus could offer compassion and comfort to his mother in his final excruciating moments of life, He will do so for us today as He sits victoriously on His throne. Jesus provided Mary with a loving, attentive son, John, and Mary trusted Jesus' decision, obediently welcoming this provision. What is our attentive Savior offering us today as we walk forward with Him?

I often hear Jesus speaking to my heart, and I know I can depend on my Savior's words to me: "For just as I provided for Mary in her moment of despair and confusion, so too, will I provide your needs. I will not abandon or leave you without a way to proceed forward. I am here for you and will care for you. Trust me and obey."

Jennifer, who has three adult sons, lives on the Darling Downs near Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, with her husband. She has a deep interest in spiritual mentoring. Contact
