In the story of the prodigal son, have you ever noticed the calf was already fattened when the son arrived home? Long before the son sat in the pig pen, long before he even considered returning, long before he headed for home, the father had planned a party to celebrate his return. Likewise God had planned a way for us to return to fellowship with him long before we considered a relationship with him.
God premeditated a way for us to be forgiven. It wasn't a hasty decision but a well-executed plan and it came at great expense. In the Old Testament we read about the Israelites celebrating the Passover and the Day of Atonement. God prearranged that Jesus would be the fulfilment of these. God had counted the cost - the death of his son on a Roman cross - yet considered us worth it. We were bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), a severely great price.
As we reflect on the enormity of God's foresight, the magnitude of his sacrifice and his zeal for a relationship with us, let's be overwhelmed with gratitude for God's amazing grace.
