| | | | | | Reconciliation – Jennifer Woodley
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
God calls us to live together in harmony, peacefully with one another. Some years ago a close friend and I parted. After speaking words which had upset her, I apologized quickly. But offense was taken. Our relationship lost its former level of honesty and relaxed sharing; until yesterday.
Opening a card from her, I read the following words: “God is currently cleaning up my life, showing me that I am carrying around offense and unforgiveness towards you. I am sorry and apologize for this. Please forgive me for holding onto hurts for so long.” Sweet words of reconciliation.
Have you offered the proverbial olive branch of reconciliation to another and they have refused to accept? We are invited to be reconciled to one another and also to God. (Romans 5:11, 2 Corinthians 5:18). For many years I had waited for my friend to respond to God’s prompting, that He might be free to restore our friendship. Now as she renewed her relationship with Him, He gently asked her to work on relationships that were not what they should be.
Let us be found reconciled to God first, then reconciliation with others will follow as we listen and respond to His voice.
Father, open my heart to receive more of you. Help me to hear your words for me, even if they hurt. Give me the courage and humility to face the relationships that are not honoring you. Show me where I have given or taken offense, and with your help to do my part in restoring what has been lost. Thank you.
