Satan and Sin are two different nouns. They are not one in the same.
To understand Romans and much of the New Testament we must understand that in Romans the word “Sin” (266 - Hamartiais in the Greek) is a noun, 48 times. The verb “sin” is used only seven times in the book of Romans. In the entire New Testament, Sin is a noun 177 times and a verb 43 times.
Sin the noun is talking about our inherited Sin nature from Adam. Just like a dog wags its tail by nature, your Sin nature sins by nature. The reason you need to be born again is so that you can escape this inherited nature and be an heir of Jesus instead of Adam. Those who stay under Adam inherit death. Those who are born again inherit eternal life.
Sin (noun)* is our inherited fallen nature from Adam that is addicted to sin (verb). In this study, I will use uppercase Sin to indicate our inherited Sin nature and sin to indicate the action of sinning.
We were made Sinners. If you were made a drug addict, you would use drugs. A person who is made a Sinner by nature, sins. Their drug of choice is sin. We were born with a nature that has an addiction to sin.
For as by the one man’s (Adam) disobedience the many were made sinners, Rom 5:19a
Satan’s job is to work overtime to tempt our inherited Sin nature to act out in sinful ways. If we let him, he then uses the law to condemn us for our sins.
Think of Satan as a drug dealer and your Sin nature as a drug user. Our inherited Sin nature is addicted to sin. It is like a drug addict that cannot get enough. Like a drug addict, when you command it to stop, it wants to do it all the more. I have heard addicts talk about the addict within them that is running their lives. I also experienced this truth personally years ago.
Addicts are trapped, held captive, in what today is called an “addiction cycle.” The temptation to feel better, use drug, ensuing guilt, shame fear, and condemnation. Continue this short study HERE. |

The steps to share your faith without fear – no confrontation. Pray and then get them alone.
Ask these five questions to help discover their personal spiritual condition.
Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
To you, who is Jesus?
Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
If you died right now, where would you go?
If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?
Listen to their answers in a calm and open way. You are asking their permission to share Christ with the last question. If they say no, you can drop it – no confrontation. You have still done the work of Christ and offered the truth.
Here are a series of five Bible verses to ask the lost person to read aloud if you have their permission. Let them read them and remain silent. After each verse they read, ask them what it says to them. If they misunderstand, ask them to read it again until they admit the truth in the verse.

Then ask them a series of five questions that summarizes the truth of the verses and lead the lost person to the point of decision.
Are you a sinner?
Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
Are you willing to surrender yourself to Christ?
Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?
Lead them in the Sinner's Prayer if they are ready to make a decision. Stay in touch and get them discipled or connect them with a local fellowship or small group for future growth.
