| | | Nurturing An Authentic Faith – Toni M. Babcock
"See to it brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God." (Hebrews 3:12 NIV) Andrew Murray once wrote "…As unbelief falls away from the living God, so faith draws nigh to Him and is fed and nourished in His presence.” That being the case, it stands to reason we should seek to nurture an authentic faith and not blame ‘weak faith’ for any spiritual lethargy we might be experiencing. "Many think and speak of unbelief as a frailty…” Murray wrote, “They wish to believe, but do not feel able; their faith, they say, is too weak. And of course they have no sense of guilt or shame connected with it: not being able to do a thing is counted a sufficient excuse for not doing it. God thinks differently.” Ah yes…God thinks differently – and gladly so. We wouldn’t want Him to endure our sorry excuses, coddle our neglect, or enable us to drift further and further away from full fellowship with Him, would we? God’s grace is greater than all our sin, but such grace demands diligence on our part not to take advantage of His good will. It is crucial as believers to come to terms with the full force of any truth. On the one hand is Christ’s assurance to His children: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28 KJV) I refer to this blessed truth as lesson #1 in eternal security. It is a profound promise of Christ Jesus the Lord, which is tantamount for each one of us to anchor our faith and hope upon. That being said, a conclusion might be drawn from the life of one whose ears appear deaf to the Voice of the Good Shepherd; who habitually chooses to shun fellowship with Christ and His Word, and whose profession appears to be just so many empty words parroted in self-delusion. For such a one, it is not God’s promise that has failed, because we know God’s promises are true. He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” (Hebrews 13:5b NKJV). However, Jesus also made it clear that some would climb into His sheepfold ‘some other way’ and in the end prove their insincerity. (cf. John 10:1 KJV) My challenge is we apply our hearts to wisdom and draw nigh to the full force of God’s Word – not that we might harbor doubts about God’s salvation, but that we might honestly examine where we stand with Jesus and strive to nurture an authentic faith. The steps to share your faith without fear – no confrontation. Pray and then get them alone.
Ask these five questions to help discover their personal spiritual condition.
Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
To you, who is Jesus?
Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
If you died right now, where would you go?
If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?
Listen to their answers in a calm and open way. You are asking their permission to share Christ with the last question. If they say no, you can drop it – no confrontation. You have still done the work of Christ and offered the truth.
Here are a series of five Bible verses to ask the lost person to read aloud if you have their permission. Let them read them and remain silent. After each verse they read, ask them what it says to them. If they misunderstand, ask them to read it again until they admit the truth in the verse.

Then ask them a series of five questions that summarizes the truth of the verses and lead the lost person to the point of decision.
Are you a sinner?
Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
Are you willing to surrender yourself to Christ?
Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?
Lead them in the Sinner's Prayer if they are ready to make a decision. Stay in touch and get them discipled or connect them with a local fellowship or small group for future growth.
