| | | How to Have God Personally Direct Our Steps – Michael Edwards
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)
Proverbs 3:5–6 is a passage many of us know well, yet its meaning becomes richer, like all verses do, when we slow down and take each phrase one at a time. These verses offer a simple but life shaping pattern for walking with God in a way that allows Him to personally guide our steps.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” To trust God with all pour heart means to place the full weight of your confidence in Him. It’s choosing to believe that He is steady, faithful, wise, and good even when life feels uncertain. Trusting Him with all your heart means holding nothing back. It means letting Him into the places where you worry, where you fear, where you dream, and where you feel unsure. It’s a wholehearted surrender that says, “God, You know better than I do, and I’m choosing to rely on You completely.” This kind of trust grows as we remember who God is and how He has been faithful before. It also takes the pressure off us when we know how we are going to make decisions in our future.
“And do not lean on your own understanding.” We all naturally lean on something. We lean on our logic, our experiences, our emotions, our assumptions and often our pride, thinking we are in control and can figure everything out. But God gently warns us that our own understanding is limited. We see only a moment at a time; He sees the whole story. Not leaning on our own understanding doesn’t mean we stop thinking. It means we stop trying to control everything and treat our perspective as the final authority. It’s admitting that God sees what we cannot and trusting His wisdom above our own.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him.” To acknowledge God means to intentionally acknowledge that He is always with us. It’s asking Him for direction, seeking His heart, and inviting His guidance into your decisions, relationships, work, and daily choices. Acknowledging Him is more than a quick prayer before moving forward with our own plans. It’s a posture of openness that says, “Lord, I want Your way, not mine.” When we acknowledge Him in all our ways, we give Him room to shape our path.
“And He will make straight your paths.” This is the promise from the ultimate promise keeper. When we trust Him fully, refuse to rely on ourselves, and acknowledge Him in everything, God takes responsibility for guiding us. A straight path doesn’t mean an easy one, but it does mean a purposeful one. God clears the way, redirects us when needed, and leads us exactly where we need to be.
Don’t just read the Bible, apply it and it will change your life. Start with today’s verse. Apply it until you get it and then do another verse.

The steps to share your faith without fear – no confrontation. Pray and then get them alone.
Ask these five questions to help discover their personal spiritual condition.
Do you have any kind of spiritual belief?
To you, who is Jesus?
Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
If you died right now, where would you go?
If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it?
Listen to their answers in a calm and open way. You are asking their permission to share Christ with the last question. If they say no, you can drop it – no confrontation. You have still done the work of Christ and offered the truth.
Here are a series of five Bible verses to ask the lost person to read aloud if you have their permission. Let them read them and remain silent. After each verse they read, ask them what it says to them. If they misunderstand, ask them to read it again until they admit the truth in the verse.

if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.… Romans 10:9-10 BSB
Then ask them a series of five questions that summarizes the truth of the verses and lead the lost person to the point of decision.
Are you a sinner?
Do you want forgiveness for your sins?
Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you and rose again?
Are you willing to surrender yourself to Christ?
Are you ready to invite Jesus into your heart and into your life?
Lead them in the Sinner's Prayer if they are ready to make a decision. Stay in touch and get them discipled or connect them with a local fellowship or small group for future growth.
