“Jesus’s 4th promise in John 14”
by
Chris van der Walt

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. (John 14:27 – NLT)

Jesus gives us four promises in this passage, the first promise - to receive the Holy Spirit, the second promise - to reveal/manifest/show Himself to us, the third promise - to live in us and then finally the fourth promise - peace the world cannot give us.

This fourth promise of Jesus tells us this gift He gives is something the world cannot give. The world can give us so many things, there are factories where we can earn a living, hospitals to help with health issues, shops to buy necessities, houses to shelter us … etc. and the list go on. But the one thing the world cannot give us is freedom from death, everyone will die and there is nothing the world can do to stop this from happening.

When we are children of God we can have the assurance that there is life after death, this is His gift to know and our peace of mind to keep. How powerful are these words to Martha! “Jesus told her, I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. (John 11:25&26 – NLT).

Let us look forward to receiving this gift, let us be grateful for Jesus’ promises and let us honour Him every day of our life.

Psalm 86:11 (NLT)Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honour you.
