My sister and I have an understanding. If one is driving, the other one is the navigator. Even in the days of Siri and Google, you can’t beat a human navigator. For one thing, Siri may call me by name, and if I’m lost, she can give me directions home. But that’s as much as Siri knows me.
My sister will let me know, “soon, you’re going to be turning left and you might want to get into the left lane now.” It’s much better than hearing from Siri, “turn left here” when I’m in the far right lane of a three-lane street during rush hour. Siri also won’t tell me which route I should take, so my favorite Starbucks is on the right (so I don’t have to do the dreaded left turn across traffic), but my sister will.
However, when it comes to life as a whole, I have the best navigator of all — the Holy Spirit. “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, “this is the way, walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21 NIV). Unlike fallible human navigators, He never steers me wrong.
My sister and I are close, but she doesn’t live inside me (a fact for which we both are thankful), but my Heavenly Navigator does. Also, as much as my sister knows me and would never deliberately guide me in a harmful direction, the Holy Spirit knows me even better. He even knows and can forewarn me if a path that looks good to me, really leads to the wrong destination.
Heavenly Father, I thank you that we do not have to travel the roads of life directionless and alone. Thank you for lovingly guiding us, may we ever be attentive to Your voice.
