With several centuries of viticulture in their family history, Romain Taupenot with his sister Virginie are running the fantastic estate of Taupenot-Merme, whose vines average 40-70 years of age. Farming organically since 2001, Romain’s approach is very hands-off. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. This once under-the-radar domaine is now getting great attention so we recommend picking up a few bottles while the price is right!

“I aim to produce very elegant wines that are the purest reflection of their climate and vintage, expressing complex but pure flavors, with very refined tannins, and good concentration without being over extracted.” — Romain Taupenot

2014 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Gevrey Chambertin $70 bottle

“A wonderfully fresh if cool nose combines notes of various red berries, newly turned earth and a hint of smoked meat. The attractively vibrant and more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins that shape the slightly more complex and persistent well-balanced finish. This is an excellent Gevrey villages and recommended.”

90 Points Stephen Tanzer “Medium red. Smoky, wild aromas of raspberry, strawberry, game and earth. Then juicy and sappy but edge-free in the mouth, with firm underlying minerality giving a penetrating quality to its red fruit flavors. Another very successful village wine with enticing inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy persistence.”
