Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The Danger of a Single Story

Every month, our SVCUE Board will engage in conversation around some piece of shared media--an article, a video, a podcast--in order to grow our understanding of the complex issues in education revolving around diversity, equity, and inclusion. We hope to build community around our shared learning, but most importantly we aim to apply our learning to be of better service to our SVCUE community and the students they serve.

This month, the board viewed Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's The Danger of a Single Story. We invite you to watch and consider some of the questions we discussed:

  • What are dimensions of difference that represent you individually? What single stories are associated with those dimensions?

  • What are dimensions of difference that are present in SVCUE? What single stories are associated with those dimensions?

  • What is our responsibility in disrupting single story narratives as an SVCUE Board?

SVCUE Monthly SEL Tune Up

New Year's resolutions often fail, and 2021 seems like a good time to start on a positive note. This month in the SEL Tune Up, SVCUE Board Member, Doreen Bonde encourages "a little paradigm shift in our approach to starting 2021... we need to try a little tenderness...with ourselves. We can do this through self-compassion." Read more in the February SEL Tune Up - 2021: This is the year to think differently about resolutions
