Antioxidant Activity: Powerful Action At The Source!
Free radicals are constantly produced in the cells; they are highly unstable. They react with cell's components (DNA, proteins, lipids) leading to the formation of even more free radicals responsible for serious damages or cell death.
Cells possess a very efficient defense system against free radicals which is composed of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD which eliminates superoxide anions (O2°-). These antioxidant enzymes have the particularity of acting at the source of the oxidation chain inside the cell by destroying free radicals in a continuous way.
One SOD molecule can eliminate thousands of oxidant molecules when a secondary antioxidant like vitamin E, can only trap a single one. In normal conditions, the body produces enough defenses to scavenge free radicals, but under "oxidative stress" conditions (stress, UV, poor diet, tobacco, pollutants, intensive physical exercise, ...) the balance is broken. An external intake of antioxidants can then be appropriate to restore the equilibrium and prevent damages.
