The next How To Write The Future podcast episode is up!

Topic: Writing Mystery in a Sci-Fi World

Listen, watch, or read the post (full transcript) here:

Hi Friend,

It’s been a wild week — really bad air quality in the SF Bay area here has made it kind of difficult to concentrate but I still managed to edit a few chapters and do some reflection on my editing process.

What was surprising to me was how far I’d come in editing my book in the last month.

I’ve reviewed my progress in advance of critique group next week and saw I’d edited 150 pages.

Despite feeling that I’d only made tiny, little steps on my book, it was gratifying to see my progress.

If you feel like you’re not making progress on your book, I suggest you take a step back and acknowledge the progress you have made so far this month or this year.

You may be presently surprised by your progress.

It’s easy to be hard on yourself.

The trick is to develop the habit of mind to see your good things too.

On to this week's podcast episode...

🎧

“You need to indicate to the reader right away that you are writing a science fiction story.”

In “Writing Mystery in a Sci-Fi World," podcast episode #63:

  • I share the difference between how a contemporary mystery novelist and a science-fiction mystery novelist will open their novel, using Michael Connelly’s book, The Late Show, compared to my scifi mystery
