We Are The Sum Of The Parts

April 19, 2019
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,
Recently I read about a writer who thanked a long list of people who helped her publish her novel.

She said she couldn't have arrived at that point without the help of her critique partners, beta readers, fans, friends, family, and also the other writers who'd helped her over the long years of working on her craft.

I honestly don't remember who I was reading about.

I just was impressed by how it took a village to bring her to this point -- a well-received book that was selling well in the marketplace.

It took a village to bring her book to market, and it takes a village to nurture a writer before they come to market.

What about you?

  • Who is in your circle? Who is part of your community?
  • Who is in your support team? Officially or unofficially?
  • Who would you like to be on your team -- maybe as a cheerleader, guide, friend, teacher, or mentor? Or in another role?

When I started out as a fiction writer, I joined a group to get me writing. I soon saw that people just wanted to dabble with lots of ideas, but I wanted to get serious about completing a novel. So I found a new group where that was supported.

Then I wanted to get into the publishing and marketing and the critique group wasn't focused on that, so I found a new community.

Now I create little support groups for peer critiquing, or marketing help, or just talking about career options.

And when I need to learn something, I take a class, read a book, or noodle through the Internet.

What about you?

  • What do you want to learn or know?
  • What topics intrigue you or are you curious about?
  • What do you desire to know or take action on above all else?

I'm curious! Let me know by hitting reply. I'd love to hear from you.
