On Revising Your Novel and
The Most Important Sentence

January 8, 2021
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,

"Now is not the time to throw up your hands, say it's all too overwhelming, and wait for a 'new normal' to arrive. Our new normal is already here: it's continued disruption."

-- Amy Webb, "Annual Future Today Institute Letter: 2020 In Review" https://mailchi.mp/futuretodayinstitute/2020-annual-letter

I’m a student of foresight strategy or futuristics, using present-day information to make guesses about what could happen in the future. And Amy Webb, a quantitative futurist, has been my favorite futurist to follow and study so far.

All this to say our only constant is change and that feels true now more than ever.

I hope that having the long view can support you in these crazy, wild, changing times.

At the end of last year, I had the good fortune to be interviewed on the Story Works Round Table podcast by Alida Winternheimer and Robert Scanlon.

Talking with them helped me see how far I’ve come since I committing to writing fiction 22 years ago.

When I started, I had zero ideas and zero books and no knowhow. All I had was my commitment, desire, and ability to sit down and move my hand across the page and produce words. Not necessarily good words, just words.

Fast forward to today... I now have more ideas than I'll probably ever be able to produce and have so far published ten novels and five nonfiction books. And I have lots of knowhow, some of which I share in these recent podcast episodes with Alida and Robert.

Together in the Story Works Round Table, we talked about my method of drafting a series, revising multiple books, and using loyal readers while I'm still drafting, plus more.

Let's jump in!

Revision, Series Drafting, & More! (part 1)

We covered:

What is the distinction between revision and revising for a reader? I dive deep into my own process of drafting and revision to help you understand what to look for at each stage of the process.

Revision, Series Drafting, & More! (part 2)

Because we covered so much, Alida broke our discussion on revisions into two parts.

Then we switched gears and discussed "Author Statement – Your North Star" – what could possibly be the most important sentence you write in 2021!

Listen with pen in hand!

“Author Statement – Your North Star”

We covered:

What is an author’s statement of purpose? And how can you use it? I walk the round table through a workshop to create their own statement. Surprise! It’s not just for marketing!

Take a listen; post your author statement for feedback; share your insights on editing and revisions.

Have a happy and creative week!

All my best,

Beth
