Hello
Friend,

Hope you're writing up a storm if you're doing NaNoWriMo, and even if you're not.

Days are getting shorter here in Northern California. And as the year draws to a close I'm more eager than ever to be creative. The Fall and Winter weather encourages me to get to work. Funny, that!

Over here at the Barany household, we're going through lots of changes. I've stepped up my creative production, writing and publishing more stories -- I wrote two novellas this year, finished one novel for teens, and I'm about to finish my next fantasy novel. I've also created more useful products for fiction writers. More on that in a moment.

Ezra Barany, my husband and business partner is putting the finishing touches on his next thriller, and creating beautiful book covers for our clients. (He's looking for beta readers. We both are. More on that below.)

I feel great -- energized and productive. But I had to make some changes in how I run my life.

One of the things I've had to do is put ALL my projects on the calendar. Not as a wish or due date, but actually block off the time when the writing will get done step-by-step, when the marketing get done, and of course, when the client work will get done -- editing and coaching sessions.

I did this because I realized something important.

To get my creative work done, I realized I had to sacrifice the high I get from skipping from project to project. I think we usually call that multi-tasking. A-hem.

In preparing for my first Bestseller in a Weekend for Fiction Writers I delivered last month -- more on the next one in December below -- I had to get a lot of things done. I was distracted sometimes. Creating my webinars seemed to take a LONG time. Oy! Kinda painful. But that was how I often created. A little work here and there, and eventually things get done.

But then I experienced something magical in teaching the 3-day intensive. I realized the value of diving deep into a project, committing all of my attention to teaching the Bestseller in a Weekend for Fiction Writers online intensive. When the teaching session was over, I walked down the hill for fresh air, a break, and to do some planning for the next session. And when the students were doing their activities, I sat down to write and finished my novella!

So now when I write, I turn off my access to the Internet and focus. I get lots done and then walk it off when I'm done. Because here's a little secret that I was thrilled to learn. I LOVE to write and teach, and  I love to move. I need both. This I knew. But what I felt in my body was that if I go deep into writing, then after a while my body wants to naturally go to moving. I didn't have to even think about it. I discovered a natural rhythm that feeds both my dreamy-creativity side and my movement-strength side.

If I want to be fit, then I need to write deep with all my heart and focus. If I want to be creative, then I work out -- walking and capoeira for me -- with all my gusto.

Now your turn. I'm curious... What happens when you let yourself go deep into your writing and turn off ALL distractions? What do you discover about your creativity? What happens when you give your writing your all?  Share your thoughts with me on Twitter.

All my best,
Beth
