Taking Risks, Large & Small

Feb. 19, 2015

Hi Friend, Hello!

Hope you are deep in your creative work and in the thick of the creative haze of it. This week I'm talking about risk taking, large and small, and sharing about a wonderful upcoming video summit for creatives.

Taking Risks, Large & Small

I've been thinking a lot about art and entrepreneurship, for years really. Today, while listening to the radio, I saw it.

I saw the connection between the arts and being an entrepreneur.

Taking risks is a part of doing art.

We reach for the new idea. We reach for the thing that's coming in with no name and find a name. We shape the story or shape the sculpture or shape the dance or the painting, or the play.

Entrepreneurship is also about taking risks -- reaching for the impossible, crafting something no one has ever seen but desires.

Art and entrepreneurship when done well are both about risk, both about growth, both about becoming more of who we are, and both about choosing to be more than what we are today. Becoming a new form for the new today.

This is why we need to both arts and entrepreneurship in the schools from day one. My opinion, anyway...

In my work, I stretch myself a bit more each time I sit down to edit or write. Just thinking about what the cover could be of my upcoming futuristic time travel romance feels risky. I've never published this book before. I don't yet know what I want the cover to look like, feel like, and what emotional experience I want it to covey to my readers. A work in progress... what will it become? I don't know yet, but I trust the process. If you're curious about the cover creation process, you can check out my gathering of images as a Pinterest board here:

For the last few years, Jennifer Lee runs a free summit for Right Brainers in Business.

Last year, I was a Spotlight guest and I listened to every lecture for the 10 days of the summit, and was super inspired and learned a lot.

I invite you to check it out because we novelists are creative entrepreneurs and can learn a lot from other creatives in other fields.

You can sign up for this free video summit here: http://bit.ly/rbbiz2015

Dates: March 9-20, 2015

Some of the things you’ll learn from this fabulous line-up include:
  • How saying no to your business can create a big YES to what’s next

  • How to create a conscious and compassionate relationship with your money... It’s more right-brained than you may think!

  • How coming out of the spiritual closet can help your business boom

  • The power of starting small to become big and why listening to your customers (or in our case, readers!) is gold

  • How to diversify and maximize your moola-making methods over time

  • What to do when you reach a “meaning crisis” in your creative business

I can’t wait to “see” you there!
