Personal Note from Beth

I had a lovely birthday last week! Ezra and I saw Jurassic World. I enjoyed it. And I also got to babysit my two nephews -- my sister runs a fab crepe business with her husband and had a Wednesday night fair. Mateo is running around on his chubby 22-month old legs, and Koceyla is happy to have the summer off from school. And, omg, he's growing like a beanpole. Hard to believe he'll be eleven soon.

3 Essential Editing Tools: Part 1: Oh the Feels!

Ezra and I are finishing up teaching the June "Plan Your Novel" course, and students are looking toward writing their novels.

And I'm getting questions on editing.

Also, several of you wrote me last week and let me know you had questions about editing your novels, so I want to share with you three essential editing tools.

Are there more than three? Of course.

These are the ones that I use all the time.

Today I'll start with one -- on how we feel about editing.

I know editing your novel can feel overwhelming, confusing, and a downright hair-pulling experience.

I know it did for me at first. Especially the overwhelming part. So much to keep track of. Where to begin?

And the one that haunted me at night... Is this book any good?

So I put off editing for months and years.

At some point I realized that I'd never get my book really done if I didn't actually face the bugaboo monster of editing. So I turned and faced the mountainous task.

And I realized I was facing in the wrong direction.

I was so focused on myself and that wasn't working.

The end product wasn't for me, not really.

It was for the reader.

#1: Feeling Into the Reader's Experience

It's not up to you to decide if the book is good.

Yes, we all need to learn how to discern a good book, but we don't write for ourselves alone.

We write for the reader.

The biggest mental switch a writer needs to make is from self-focused -- which you needed to be in the creative flow -- to reader focused.

Here's an exercice to experience what I mean and to help you make the switch:

Imagine you're sitting at a table with your reader. In front of you both is your completed first draft.

Notice how you feel about your book. Just notice and don't judge the maelstrom that may be churning inside of you. Do identify one or two emotions, and just notice them.

Identify your thoughts that run through your mind.

Lastly, is there any action you'd like to take in regards to your manuscript?

Now pretend you can float up out of your chair and sink into your reader, so that you are her or him.

Allow yourself to align with their heart, and lungs, and fingers and toes.

Now look at the writer's manuscript. What do you notice? What do you feel?

Appreciate that awareness. Acknowledge and notice what thoughts may arise. Also, notice any action you may wish to take.

Take a snapshot of this moment and float on up out of the reader, and bring your consciousness back into you.

Take a breath or two and reorient into your body.

Wiggle your fingers and toes and stand up. Now sit down. Okay, you've landed. Oh, stick out your tongue and make a silly face. Good. You're you.

So....

What did you notice?

What Aha or new awareness did you have with this exercise?

And how do you feel now about your manuscript?

And what would you like next?

Please hit reply and let me know your thoughts. I'm always interested in hearing from you!

All my best,

Beth

Course Description:
  • What do I say on social media?
  • How do I find my audience?
  • What do I blog about?
  • Do I even need to blog?
  • How can I market without a budget?
  • I hate social media.
  • I don’t have the time to market myself and/or my books.

If you have any of these questions and concerns as a romance or other genre novelist, then you may not be focusing on what’s essential on your author marketing.

Nowadays, authors do more than just book marketing. We must market ourselves as a brand.

But authors tend to be private people. And we put so much work into our books, what do you mean we have to market ourselves, you may think?

You can develop an author persona that you feel good about, grow your audience, gather your fans, find people who can spread the word for you, and feel good about your marketing efforts, but it’s not an overnight thing.

And still the most important marketing tool we have is to write a great book.

So, what’s an author to do?

In this course on Branding for Romance Authors and Other Genre Novelists, we will build a foundation for your author brand. Authors need to know who they are and what they stand for and then be willing to experiment and play to find what works for them and what is fun. Our overall goal is to have you start your author career off as strongly as you can.

This course is both for unpublished and published authors, independently published and traditionally published. Geared more for beginners, more advanced authors will also find this course useful.

In this four-week hands-on online course, you will be invited to roll up your sleeves, try out the tools I recommend, and get feedback from the class on your efforts.

We will cover:

• Your core values
• What you stand for
• Defining your audience
• Crafting a 1-sentence branding statement
• Writing an author bio for your blog and social media
• How to use one of the most important tools in marketing: the Call to Action
• How to set up a mailing list
• Who your Key Influencers are and why they’re important
• The importance of launching and campaigns and the basics in how to craft one
• Ways authors can use their blog and what to say in blogging
• Drafting a content plan that plays to your strengths, interests, and what works

This course comes with some special features:
• We’ll run a Facebook party.
• We’ll run a Twitter chat.
• We’ll have at least 2 live online chats.
• We have 1 live webinar.

Lastly, this course comes with the added bonus of an online book marketing assessment from Beth Barany, the course instructor, and a 30-minute phone session with her.

Because of the interactive nature of this course, we’re offering it at a special price of $50 (for OIRW members) and $60 (for non-members.)
Note: This is the only time this course will be offered at this low price.
