Hi Friend,

The newsletter is delayed a due to brain fog yesterday -- probably due to overcharing my calendar. Because I'm in deep transition...

Today I want to share with you about my evolution -- and I'm in the middle of another big change.

Creative people, we don't stand still, do we?

I've been helping writers in my business for 20 years now, and I've always helped writers.

I've helped all kinds of writers: non-fiction, general fiction, and in the last four years, I've helped science fiction and fantasy writers.

Before that, for another previous six years or so, I was helping genre fiction writers.

So, as you can seem, my business (and me along with it) has evolved.

I started out as a creativity coach for writers, and I am now shifting out of that role and into a new one... all the while still helping science fiction and fantasy writers with my Edit Lab, my Edit Mastermind, and tailored one-on-one work.

My new role is as a Producer -- a producer of podcasts, books, and YouTube channels. (And eventually, TV, documentaries, and film.)

For many years, the term "producer" has been floating around undefined.

I didn't know exactly what it was or what it meant, even though I was attracted to it ever since I started working on my short film -- which is now going through the tedious editing process.

What does all this mean for you?

I'm still here helping you -- science fiction and fantasy writer -- with your writing, editing, publishing, marketing.

That's my passion, that's what I'm still doing for myself!

I wrote two stories this week — dictated them, in fact, which has been a new thing for me, but necessary because of ongoing repetitive stress injuries in my hands and a real physical limitation in them.

These stories are part of the TV show I want to make, based on my Henrietta The Dragon Slayer, YA fantasy trilogy.

All that to say: things are constantly shifting for creative people.

I imagine you've gone through many evolutions yourself, and maybe even wear many hats.

How many hats do you wear?

I wear the hat of writer, editor, business owner, wife, friend, human being.

Oh, and I can't forget cat mom, or cat servant. Depending on the moment.

More Upcoming Events for Writers!

First up - Mira’s Picture Book in a Day on Saturday, Sept. 19th, 2026 3:00–6:00 PM Pacific time.

Mira is a friend of mine. I'm not an affiliate. And, I think her material is top notch.

She knows I don't work with children's book authors but reminded me that we all probably have a children's book inside of us.

"You can even adapt one of your published books," she reminded me.

I hadn't thought of that!

Maybe I could do the kid's version of a mystery on a space station to solve. That could be fun! (Adult version, if you're curious)

Maybe you have a picture book inside of you. :)

A Fun, Live, Interactive Three-Hour Workshop to Write a New Picture Book, or Revitalize a Story You Already Have!

Live Online (and Recorded with Indefinite Access), work with Dr. Mira Reisberg, Founder of the Children's Book Academy; Jen Newens, President of Martin-Newens Literary Management; and a professional editor.

For more information and how to register, check out all the details on Mira's Children's Book Academy site.

And tell your friends!

🎉

🎤 Building Your Inner Circle of Support: How to Find Beta Readers

How To Write The Future podcast, episode 218

“We may write alone, but we actually edit together.”

- Beth Barany

This short episode packs a punch!

In this episode, I share why it's important to nurture your beta reader relationships, where to find beta readers, and what questions you can ask them after they've read your book.

Building trusting relationships with your beta readers can make the process easier when it comes to your next book, as they’ll be waiting for the email about your new story.

There's also an actual sample email in the resources you can adapt to your book from my article: "3 Essential Editing Tips: Beta Readers (Pt 3)."

Lastly, I want to give you a heads up about AI.

I have been working on my AI policy — rather, I want to call it my LLM policy.

I am going to be a guest panelist and solo speaker at the online AI Writing Summit, September 14–18.

If you are someone who is diametrically opposed to everything about the topic, I just want to give you a heads up.

While I respect your opinion, I also know that this is a piece of technology that's not going away anytime soon, and as an educator, I encourage you to learn what you can about it.

There are so many free tools out there to help you understand what it is and what it isn't.

My stance is: I don’t use AI to write. I use it to organize, summarize, and interact with my own work.

If you're curious to learn more about my process, come to the upcoming summit. I'll have a link for you soon.

❤️

Happy Writing!

Best,

Beth

PS. What I just finished and adored: Clues & Chills: New England Stories of Mystery & Murder by Janet Raye Stevens

Yes, we've been watching the latest season of Reacher and liking it.

We've also been watching the lastest episodes of Cassandre -- a French murder mystery set in the gorgeous Southeastern region of France near Italy and Switzerland. (I haven't yet visited there!) I really enjoy this show.

Listening to the luscious and dramatic Black Adam soundtrack by Lorne Balfe.
