Iâve been working behind the scenes on a new program for fiction writers.
And now Iâm excited to bring it to you!
Title:Â Settings that Hook Readers
-- a 90-minute hands-on training for character-driven fiction writers
Date: Saturday, August 2nd 11am PTÂ
-- on Airmeet (an online tool that's free and easy to use)

So many writers I've worked with want their stories to feel vivid and immersive, but setting often gets brushed aside, reduced to 'just enough' to get by.
Thereâs a lot of advice out there about setting. But most of it is either very surface-level ("add more sensory detail!") or so academic that it doesnât connect to the actual work of writing compelling, character-driven fiction.
I donât see many spaces where we take a deep, practical dive into setting, where we connect the craft with the emotional heart of a story and the experience of the reader.
This class is for fiction writers who:
Want to create a rich, immersive world, without writing paragraphs of description
Care about tone, character, genre, and emotional resonance
Want tools that help them revise with clarity, not guesswork
Are ready to understand setting as more than scenery
In this class, weâll explore:
What setting really does for a story, and how to use it with intention
How to evaluate your opening through the lens of time, place, genre, and character
How your characterâs worldview and emotional filter shape what they notice
Practical framing techniques (wide, medium, close-up) to control pacing and mood
Guided exercises to help you revise and enhance your opening scenes
This is a hands-on class with examples, reflection, and time to apply what youâre learning in real time.
Guess what? Registration is now open! And Iâm offering it only to my list - you get first dibs!
