A Rip Roaring Good Read

June 11, 2020
Oakland, CA

Hi Friend,
When I was a little girl I'd read late into the night, flashlight under the covers. I loved reading.

I wanted to write the engrossing stories I was reading, but I didn't know how. So instead I played with language, writing poems and silly limericks. I even wrote a little story book about our cats with my brother and hand sewed the binding.

Fast forward to when I was 30 years old and I was rejected from the only journalism school I applied to -- I know, stupid to apply to only one school.

After I picked myself off the floor, I asked myself what I truly wanted, and it was right there in my application essay: I wanted to be a novelist.

It was time to commit.

So I did what had always worked previously when I wanted to learn something new: I found a group to keep me accountable and surrounded myself with experienced writers to help me learn everything.

I was starting from scratch.

It took my five years to write my first novel. But I stuck with it. 16 manuscripts later, 9 books published in three genres... young adult adventure fantasy, paranormal sweet romance, and science fiction mystery.

And now 20+ years later my dream has come true. I write rip roaring good reads and help others do the same.

If that's your dream too, then there are steps you can take that probably sound familiar: you write, and write some more; you read a lot; and you never stop learning.

For example, this week I attended a webinar on author branding and the week before I attended one on podcasting. In between, I studied good sentence structure, prepped marketing for my new novel, and edited the next book in my series.

All this to say I love being the master of my own fate, at the helm of my author career.

That's the life of an indie author.

How about you? If you're looking for more tools on writing, marketing, and publishing, I recommend the Write Publish Profit bundle I'm a part of here: (my course, Book Launches and Campaigns for Novelists, is in the bundle)

Have a happy and creative week! Happy writing, editing, creating!

Best,
Beth
