I’ve got two asks and a share for you today, and I’m going to start with the share.
I recently recorded a podcast episode (you’ll hear it in a few weeks) about risk.
I was comparing the risks we take as creative writers versus the risks we take as creative entrepreneurs.
And here’s something you might not be thinking about: if you’re a fiction writer who wants to publish, sell your books, and make that part of your career (or your whole career), then guess what? You’re a creative entrepreneur.
Now, everyone has a different risk tolerance.
We’re not all the same. I know you know that, but it can be helpful to step back and look at your own level of risk tolerance.
I didn’t talk about risk tolerance directly in the episode.
That episode is more about how you go about taking risks, and what it feels like for you.
So I wanted to pop in today and share this: knowing your risk tolerance is really useful.
It helps you learn and grow in your marketing and selling practices, because at the heart of being a creative entrepreneur is bringing your work to the marketplace.
If bringing your work to the marketplace gives you the heebie-jeebies, I totally get it.
I’ve been helping authors learn marketing for their books for a long time, over 15 years, and here’s a little secret I’m excited to share with you:
You don’t have to do all the marketing things. Period.
You just need to find a way to meet your marketplace, and meet your right readers, in a way that works for you and is sustainable.
That means you can do outreach and tell people about your book on an ongoing basis.
So if you hate ads, fine. Don’t do ads. (I honestly don’t do ads.)
If you like in-person events, do those.
If you like email marketing, like I do, do that.
By the way, Liz Wilcox, my email marketing mentor, is celebrating her fifth anniversary this year. I’ve been a member for over two years. Her materials are so awesome, and I’ve been using her templates as inspiration and learning marketing from her. She’s a real testament to using marketing that works for her: she doesn’t do ads at all, and yet she’s grown her membership into a sustainable business. Quite wonderful. Check her out here. So that’s my share: what is your risk tolerance?
When you think about taking a step in marketing, what is your risk tolerance for being a creative entrepreneur?
Here's my 1st ask:
If you are called to help other writers as a creative writer (meaning being an editor, teacher, coach, virtual assistant, or anything involved in the book production process), then I invite you to come to our upcoming March bootcamp.

Here's ask #2:
If you have a mailing list, social media following, or a community, we are looking for affiliates for this event.
You get to earn 50% of the ticket, and our goal is to reach thousands of people because our goal is to have 100 people in the bootcamp learning together, in community.
This is an opportunity to help us spread the word, even if you have a small following.
We’re also interested in affiliates who are connected to passionate small communities. We’re not putting any kind of number limit on this.
If you want to practice marketing, you’re excited about what we’re doing, and you want to share it with your friends (online and in person), contact me, or just go here and click to sign up to be an affiliate.
