Remember Goliad
175 Years of Texas History and going strong — draw your line in the sand today
In Goliad.
Here is a general timeline of what occurred.
While Santa Anna was besieging and storming the Alamo, his deputy General José de Urrea won battle after battle in the Goliad Campaign -- at San Patricio, at Agua Dulce, at Refugio, and at Coleto. The last, on March 20th, ended with the entire command of Texas Colonel James W. Fannin surrendering to the Mexicans. General Urrea now held nearly 450 Texans.
General Santa Anna ordered them all shot.
175 years ago YESTERDAY, on Palm Sunday, March 27th, 1836, Mexican soldiers murdered nearly the entire company of Texan prisoners. Some few were saved through chance or the mercy of conscience-stricken Mexicans like Colonel Francisco Garay and Francita Alavez, the "Angel of Goliad" -- but the great mass of hundreds of Texans met their end.
Santa Anna believed that Texans would bow to terror. He was wrong. The effect of the Goliad Massacre and the Alamo's destruction galvanized the young Texas nation like nothing else could. Texans now knew for certain that Colonel Travis's famous letter was a prophecy: it truly was "victory or death." To the north, Sam Houston gathered his army -- and prepared for victory.
And guess what the Texas State Historical Association’s daily history email touts for today? You won’t guess it, so I will tell you….
“On this day in 1925, Longhorn track coach Clyde Littlefield inaugurated the Texas Relays at the Texas Memorial Stadium, drawing to Austin some of the best college track athletes and even three Olympians.”
Entertainment vs Freedom. Sports vs Liberty.
So much for understanding real Texan history!
