Subject: Who says these are rules?

Most rules aren't real "rules". You get to decide what and how they apply.

Success Without Sacrifice

N E W S L E T T E R

Because real success leaves space for real life.

There are certain “rules” (of life) that many of us follow.

Don’t talk politics (with people on the “other side”). If it ain't broke, don’t fix it. Work harder than everyone else.

And yet…

  • Never talking politics with the “other side” can lead to serious misunderstandings (and a lack of empathy).

  • Just because something isn’t broken doesn’t mean it shouldn't be improved.

  • Working harder doesn't guarantee success. [And you can only push yourself so much before it turns against you].

Like most lawyers, I've been an avid rule follower most of my life.

But thanks to my kids (especially my youngest, Noah), I've slowly changed.

THE THING TO REMEMBER:

You get to decide what rules (and how they) apply to you.

Whenever presented with a new rule, Noah almost always asks a million questions:

  • Why (what's the purpose)?

  • Who made the rule?

  • Why not another one?

This is typically followed by a "what about when this happens" question designed specifically to break the "rule".

[Sometimes, I think Noah was born for the sole purpose of questioning every rule that ever existed.]

Although I still live by certain rules, I've tailored them to meet my needs and align with my values. Which means:

I have a deeper understanding of why certain rules are meaningful to me (and also, when to bend, or even break, them).

What about you, Friend?

What rules have you accepted as the "norm" without considering whether and how you want them to apply to you?

WHICH BRINGS ME TO...

A quick announcement (and new rule broken).

There's a marketing "rule" that says you MUST send your newsletter at least weekly (without ever taking time off).

I'm about to break that rule. For the next 3 weeks, you won’t be hearing from me.

My youngest is starting a new school next week. My oldest is about to head back to Ohio State. And I need to get my Fall podcast and mastermind launch going.

Basically, I need some space for family + strategic planning.

But I will be back (the first Tuesday in September). Hopefully, you won't have forgotten about me by then. ;-)

XO,

Heather
